Ingredients

For the Chicken Fried Steak
  • 4 pieces beef round steaks about 1/2 inch thick
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour for breading
  • 2 large eggs beaten
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon salt for seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper for seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 2 cups vegetable oil for frying
For the Gravy
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour for thickening
  • 2 cups milk whole or 2%
  • 1 teaspoon salt to taste
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper to taste

Method

Prepare the Steak
  1. Use a meat tenderizer to pound the beef round steaks to about 1/4 inch thickness.
  2. Season both sides of the steaks with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
Breading Process
  1. Set up a breading station with three bowls: one with flour, one with beaten eggs mixed with buttermilk, and one with seasoned flour.
  2. Dredge each steak in the flour, dip in the egg mixture, and then coat with the seasoned flour again.
Fry the Steaks
  1. Heat vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat.
  2. Fry the breaded steaks for about 3-4 minutes on each side or until golden brown and cooked through.
  3. Remove from the pan and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
Make the Gravy
  1. In the same pan, remove excess oil, leaving about 1/4 cup.
  2. Whisk in the flour to create a roux, cooking for about 1 minute.
  3. Slowly add milk while whisking continuously until the gravy thickens.
  4. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
Serve
  1. Serve the chicken fried steak hot, topped with the creamy gravy.
