  • 2 cups masa harina
  • 1 cup chicken broth or vegetable broth
  • 1/2 cup vegetable shortening softened
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
Filling Ingredients
  • 2 cups cooked shredded chicken
  • 1 cup red salsa or green salsa
  • 1 cup cheese optional
Wrapping Ingredients
  • 20 pieces dried corn husks soaked in warm water for 30 minutes

Method
 

Preparation
  1. In a large bowl, combine masa harina, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Gradually add chicken broth and vegetable shortening, mixing until well combined.
  3. Fold in cooked shredded chicken and salsa.
Assembly
  1. Lay out a corn husk, spread a portion of the masa mixture on the lower half, and add cheese if desired.
  2. Fold the sides inward and roll from the bottom to the top to close the tamale.
Cooking
  1. Place the tamales upright in a steamer and steam for 1-2 hours until firm.
  2. Allow to cool slightly before serving.
